In this article, I would like to share my views on Purusha Suktam which is the most widely used hymn to adore Vishnu. In fact, the pada (feet) of Vishnu is stated as the holiest of places. This phenomenon of Tripada or Haripada is detailed in Rk Veda at numerous occasions. The underlying principle and differences between the concepts of Bhavas (Houses) and Rasis (Signs) are also rooted in these concepts. In these fundamental concepts lie the differences between Sayana (Tropical, Western) and Nirayana (Sidereal, Vedic) astrology. In more layman terms Solar System and Galactic System are different and distinct planes of reference. The root of this difference lies in the concepts of Bhuva loka and Swarga loka. Haripada and Mesha Sankranti are different dates and concepts just like Uttarayan and Makar Sankranti are different dates and concepts. This is why "Surya" is worshiped in Uttarayan (Winter Solstice) since Brahma cannot be worshiped, Vishnu is worshiped in spring (also celebrated as New Year in many calenders), Shiva in Summer Solstice (Dakshinayan) and Devi in autumn (fall).

This is also the philosophy why 12 degrees before the actual position of New Moon or Full Moon the "phase" of the Tithi begins. More than "day" of the Christmas, the "arrival" of Christmas is more important.

In the Indian (Vedic or Hindu) philosophy we always look towards events of the future. In one year, we (Earth and life forms in it) cross these four major points - Vernal Equinox (equivalent to Lagna), Summer Solstice (equivalent to 4H), Autumn Equinox (equivalent to 7H), and Winter Solstice (equivalent to 10H). The Lagna (Ascendant) is the seat of Brahma, 4th house the seat of Vishnu, 7th for Shiva and 10th for Shakti. The solstices and equinoxes are the underlying principle of Indian festivals and the principle of the jyotish Bhavas. Vernal Equinox takes the Earth from the Brahma mode to the Vishnu mode and initiates the Vasanta Rtu (The spring season). Today, most of the world, calls it seasons.

All across the globe, this marks the advent of spring and in ancient India this was celebrated by colors to mark activity, love and fun - all symbolic of spring! In my seminar series that I conduct once a month in Chicago, I have been sharing this knowledge of the bio clock in all of us. It is at this moment Vishnu (Hari) is remembered as conquering the Universe with His three steps. IntroductionAt 6:02 hrs CDT on March 20 2013, the planet Earth experience a magical moment that happens only once in 365 days called Vernal Equinox.
